很多患者區分不了癲癇小發作的癥狀，癲癇小發作患者從年齡上看兒童比成年人常見，小兒癲癇小發作幾乎總是從4歲之間和12歲，而且發作次數很少;癲癇小發作的特點是：癥狀表現不明顯，持續時間通常不超過幾秒鐘，但是損害患兒的意識，通常不超過幾秒鐘。

癲癇小發作的癥狀有什么表現?其發作形式有：失神發作(典型小發作)：發作時短暫的意識喪失、突然中止原來的活動、中斷談話、面色蒼白、雙目凝視、無神、手中持物跌落、頭前傾、口角眼瞼顫動、時有眼球顫動，既不跌倒、也不抽搐。發作不超過30秒，突然停止，恢復清醒。兒童癲癇小發作時，無論是或坐或是站立，通常只是茫然的盯著某處、不說話也失去了聽覺。

患者癲癇小發作之后，他們又會突然見繼續發作之前進行的活動。癲癇發作的時間并沒有打斷他們原來的活動或思考。在長期沒有發作之后還可能會發生自動癥。長時間的癲癇持續狀態可能會伴隨著自動癥，這種狀態往往會與復雜部分性發作相混淆。相比來說，其實復雜部分性發作會持續更長的一段時間，這種小發作可能是復雜性發作之前的先兆。最典型的兒童癲癇小發作可能會偶爾出現一次或超過100次。
