抗癲癇藥的服用一般需要較長的時間，病人不可短期服藥后停止用藥。抗癲癇藥一般要服用兩周左右，血中濃度才能到達一個穩定而又有效的水平。但有的患者治病心切，吃藥僅幾天未看出效果，不是更換醫院，就是更換醫生，再就是要求醫生更換藥物，這樣換來換去，醫院去了多家，大夫看了多位，藥物換了多種，卻總不見效，其原因就在此。任何一種藥應在治療足夠時間后才能判斷是否有效。癲癇是個慢性病，需要長期服藥，在服藥過程中，不能突然停藥，突然停藥會引起癲癇的頻繁發作，甚至危及生命。即使經過長時間治療無發作的患者，一般應在發作完全停止兩年以上且腦電圖恢復正常，方可考慮減藥直至停藥，但即便如此，減藥也應在醫師指導下，逐漸減慢，往往從減藥到停藥需半年到一年甚至更長的時間。如減藥過程中又有發作，應重新服用足量的藥物。
