有關研究認為父母近親、發熱驚厥家族史、精神分裂及偏頭痛家族史都有較高的癲癇發病率，且一般不表現為顯性或隱性遺傳。另外在臨床中也有許多和先天性中樞神經系統疾病或心臟畸形合并癲癇的病例，如結節性硬化、神經纖維瘤、家族性黑矇性癡呆、異染性腦白質營養不良等并不符合任何一種孟德爾遺傳，因而應歸于多基因遺傳。
