癲癇發作的定義可以定為:大腦神經元的陣發性放電，引起臨床上病人和觀寒者都能察覺到的各種表現。這里用大腦是除外了脊髓神經元活動所致的脊髓肌陣攣、牽張誘導的陣攣或截癱中的屈肌痙攣。“陣發性放電”一詞是用以除外諸如偏頭痛或腦缺血性疾病引起的神經元活動抑制所致的短暫性偏癱。

癲癇病的治療并非一早一夕就能完成的，除了持之以恒的治療外，患者對于醫院和療法的選擇也是至關重要的。
