很多女性患者，為了避免癲癇病遺傳給下一代，便選擇了不要孩子，通常這類患者采取一定的避孕手段，現在的避孕方式主要有兩種，一種是口服藥物避孕，一種是工具避孕。

降低其避孕效果，如果在癲癇沒有得到很好控制的時候，不小心懷孕了，那么對于胎兒和孕婦來說，都是非常危險的，因為有的女性在妊娠期時候，有益于激素分泌的改變，女性癲癇就會較易發作，這樣本身對于孕婦本人來說不僅傷害很大，而且對于腹中的胎兒來說，也是致命的傷害。

癲癇女性不能吃避孕藥，是因為現在的口服避孕藥基本上都是激素類的，激素類的避孕藥吃了以后，一般的來講雌激素占很主要的位置，而雌激素會加重癲癇的發作。另外抗癲癇藥有一些;甘酶誘導劑;的作用，會使避孕藥的效果下降，造成避孕失敗!所以說這兩者之間，抗癲癇藥可能影響到避孕的效果，避孕藥又可能加重癲癇的發作，這兩者可能都是要注意到的。
