專家指出：由獲得性因素引起腦的結(jié)構(gòu)異常、或代謝異常，可產(chǎn)生致癇灶或降低驚厥閾值。病變可以是限局性或彌漫性，靜止性或進(jìn)行性。這類癲癇病的原因稱為癥狀性癲癇。在癥狀性癲癇中，遺傳因素也可能是癲癇病的原因，在兒童時期尤其如此。兒童的獲得性癲癇病的原因有很多，按照致病因素可分為腦部病變、缺氧性疾患、代謝及內(nèi)分泌紊亂、中毒等。

癲癇病也是有遺傳傾向的，換句話說，其有幾率被后代繼承。因為癲癇病的原因和遺傳因素是不無關(guān)系的。此外，癲癇發(fā)作多系突然發(fā)生，無明顯誘因。但也有一些癲癇病的原因，確實有誘發(fā)因素的存在。這種誘發(fā)因素可能周期性出現(xiàn)，如發(fā)作可與內(nèi)分泌因素或月經(jīng)有關(guān)，另一些誘發(fā)因素則是不規(guī)則發(fā)生。癲癇病的起因可以是正常生活中的自然性感覺性刺激，也可能是突然出現(xiàn)的刺激，或由病兒自己誘導(dǎo)的刺激。

據(jù)國內(nèi)外調(diào)查，其患病率大約為0.5%左右。本病確切的發(fā)病機(jī)理至今仍未完全闡明。目前根據(jù)癲癇的發(fā)病是否與某些因素有關(guān)而將其分為原發(fā)性與繼發(fā)性兩類。繼發(fā)性又稱為癥狀性癲癇，是指有明顯致病因素者，如腦血管疾病、顱腦損傷、腦部感染等，也可以是某些全身性疾病，如心血管疾病、缺氧、代謝性疾病的結(jié)果。
