臨床病史具有決定意義。腦電圖及與之有關的檢查是診斷癲癇最關鍵的輔助檢查。老年人癲癇的腦電圖異常多表現為局灶性慢波活動，而癇性放電則較其他年齡組少見。實驗室診斷主要用于幫助查找引起老年人癲癇發和的原因;在治療的過程中，監測藥物的毒副作用;抗癇藥物血藥濃度測定，以提供可靠的抗癇藥血的藥濃度水平。
