藥代動力學丙戊酸鈉口服或靜脈注射后，其生物活性接近100%。分布的范圍主要限于血液，并迅速交換至細胞外液，腦脊液中的丙戊酸鈉的濃度與游離血漿濃度接近，德巴金能通過胎盤，哺乳期婦女用藥時，在乳汁中德巴金分泌的濃度很低(血清總濃度在1%-10%)。口服后，丙戊酸可迅速(3-4天)達到穩態血濃度。

主要適用于治療全身性或部分性癲癇，尤其是以下的發作類型：失神發作、肌陣攣發作、失張力發作和混合性發作以及部分性癲癇：簡單性或復雜性發作;繼發性全身性發作;有些患者在服藥后有神經功能絮亂，嗜睡或僵木，出現昏迷還可致患者消化道絮亂，惡心，胃痛等癥狀，癥狀通常在數天內可消失。
