癲癇病是一種突發性，短暫性大腦功能失調性疾病。因強直性發作常伴有腦室出血，而肌陣攣發作本身即屬于早期肌陣攣性腦病癥狀群的一部分，所以二者的預后都比較差。再則，癲癇病主要由兒童神經系統發育不全，大腦皮層受到高熱或劇烈的精神刺激，產生過度興奮引起。癲癇病的早期癥狀包括前驅癥狀和先兆癥狀。

前驅癥狀是指在大發作前的數日或數小時，出現的全身不適、易激惹、煩燥不安、情緒憂郁、心境不佳、常挑剔或抱怨他人的癥狀。癲癇病先兆癥狀，是指失神性癲癇病大發作前數秒鐘內，病人出現的錯覺、幻覺、自動癥、局部肌陣攣或其它特殊感覺等。有些精神運動性發作，也可出現類似大發作的前驅癥狀。

反復發作對癲癇病患者的智力及精神發育也有嚴重癲癇病影響。通常癲癇病早期癥狀會表現為突然動作停止、眼神空洞持續五至十秒鐘后驟然結束，嚴重癲癇病癥狀表現為突然神志喪失，呼吸暫停、四肢抽動，雙手握拳，兩眼上翻或黑眼球偏向一側，面色青紫，口吐白沫，常伴有舌咬傷和尿失禁。
