在臨床上，大多數抗癲癇藥物可以從母親血液中進人乳汁，在產后24天中測定：苯妥英鈉乳汁中濃度遠低于母體血液濃度，如果嬰兒從乳汁中攝入的藥物濃度為0.03-0.47mg/千克體重，那么對嬰兒無害。苯巴比妥可以在嬰兒血液中蓄積而產生鎮靜作用，卡馬西平在嬰兒體內的血液度一般為1.7mg/升，最高可達4.7mg/升，都低于藥物起作用的濃度，個別出現藥物性肝炎。乙琥胺乳汁中濃度與血濃度相似，嬰兒每日攝人量相當于母親攝入量的60%一100%，可產生鎮靜作用，或過度興奮;丙戊酸在乳兒血液中濃度很低，無臨床作用。氯硝西泮在母親乳汁中濃度為血濃度的37%，曾有報道嬰兒吸乳后引起呼吸暫停，對新抗癲癇藥尚缺乏了解。
