典型的失神發作也稱小發作，表現為突然發生和突然休止的意識障礙，一次持續5～30秒，事后對發作全過程無記憶。腦電圖在發作中呈現雙側對稱的2.5～4hz棘―慢波，偶爾為多棘―慢波，發作間期也可有同樣或較短的陣發活動，背景波形正常?？梢詮膬和诔掷m至成年期。

失神伴意識障礙：表現為僅有意識障礙，發作時正在進行的動作突然終止，主要以突然發生和突然停止的發呆、雙眼凝視為特點，還可有動作停止、持物失落，既無先兆又無回憶，來得快去得也快，患者不能了解發作的經過，但發作前所做的動作仍可繼續，如不注意難以發覺這種發作。

失神伴輕度陣攣的成分：發作開始完全同僅有意識障礙者，但尚有眼瞼、口角或其他肌群的顫抖，由不易覺察一直到全身性肌陣攣。眼瞼的陣攣性發作可導致節律性睡眠。陣攣往往為雙側性，但一般不影響其姿勢，如手中持物則可能掉落。

失神伴無張力成分：表現為除失神外的因低張力所產生的頭或軀干向前傾，伴有頭部、上肢的下墜;手中所拿物件掉落;偶爾出現因全身肌張力喪失而致患者跌倒;若維持姿勢的肌張力減退不對稱，那么頭可垂向一側，軀干傾斜;如果患者站著雙膝可彎曲。
