流行病學由于所調查疾病的定義，人群的構成及病例診斷條件等各異而常較混亂。

癲痛因其可出現在任何年齡，具有很多不同的發作形式，申不同病因所產生，且有多種發生的基礎，可被各種環境因素所促發，并可以沒有明確原因而發作或終止，所以癲癇的流行病學較其他神經疾病更為復雜。為此，規定其使用的術語是十分重要的。

癲癇發作的定義可以定為:大腦神經元的陣發性放電，引起臨床上病人和觀寒者都能察覺到的各種表現。這里用大腦是除外了脊髓神經元活動所致的脊髓肌陣攣、牽張誘導的陣攣或截癱中的屈肌痙攣。“陣發性放電”一詞是用以除外諸如偏頭痛或腦缺血性疾病引起的神經元活動抑制所致的短暫性偏癱。

癲癇病的治療并非一早一夕就能完成的，除了持之以恒的治療外，患者對于醫院和療法的選擇也是至關重要的。
