4、當病人抽搐痙攣停止，進入昏睡狀態后，應迅速將病人的頭轉向一側，同時抽去其上下牙之間的墊塞物，讓病人口中的唾液和嘔吐物流出，避免窒息，同時舌根也不易后墜而阻塞氣道。

因為癲癇發作是一過性的，通常的發作不超過2~3分鐘而自動緩解。一般情況下，除非癲癇連續狀態需要緊急處理外，不需要叫急救車送醫院搶救。在病人發作時，應注意保護患者不要摔傷、燙傷等。有些家屬使勁掐人中或怕咬破舌頭而將手指或筷子放進患者嘴里，這都是不必要的，有時甚至會引起其他損害。

在發作時也不要強行給病人灌藥，這樣會造成嗆咳和窒息。可讓病人平臥，松開衣領，頭轉向一側，雙手扳住患者的下頜發避免咬舌，家中有條件的也可以給病人吸上氧氣。另外，癲癇病人應避免在發作時有危險的工作，不要開車、游泳以免發生意外。
