多囊性卵巢在普通人群中較為常見。多囊性卵巢綜合癥(多毛癥、痤瘡、肥胖、生殖能力低下、雄激素過多和月經紊亂)并不常見。有資料顯示，在女性癲癇病人中，多囊性卵巢疾病的發病率增加，而且服用丙戊酸后發病率更高。當然，這還是個極有爭議性的問題。也有證據表明，丙戊酸還可以增加無排卵性月經周期的危險。因此，在臨床實踐中，對育齡期的婦女不使用丙戊酸，避免引起出生缺陷(脊柱裂)、多囊性卵巢綜合性、無排卵性月經周期和體重增加的諸多問題。

四、癲癇與女性激素

在月經周期的過程中，人們可以預見到癲癇發作的頻率變化(經期性癲癇)。多年的臨床經驗證實，發作頻率在月經期時常增多，這個特征性的表現，是由于此時雌激素、孕激素的比值較高所致(正在月經前期、月經期中和排卵期)。雌激素可以誘發海馬神經元的結構和功能發生變化，增加了癲癇發作的易感性。在癲癇動物模型中，孕激素可經降低癲癇發作的易感性。對已存在的癲癇發作的加重，同樣也是一個危險因素。
