(一)癲癇本身

抗癲癇藥物如苯巴比妥、苯妥英、卡馬西平、安定類藥物等，均可引起患兒行為異常。加巴噴丁作為輔助用藥，給予7例癲癇兒童之后，患兒原有異常行為加重、或出現新的異常行為，但減量或停藥后消失。但也有抗癲癇藥物如卡馬西平，丙戊酸及拉莫三嗪，改善行為的報道。抗癲癇藥物影響行為的機制仍不清楚。

(三)家庭、社會對癲癇兒童的態度

不少學者研究發現，家長在孩子被診斷為癲癇后，產生焦慮、抑郁情緒及母親的癲癇知識水平和對患兒的態度，是影響患兒心理狀態的重要因素。老師或其他人由于缺乏癲癇知識而對患兒的表現不理解、責難、甚至歧視或戲弄，與癲癇兒童的心理行為異常密切相關。
