在許多情況下，突發性的癲癇病和遺傳性質的癲癇可以等同，但也有一些情況兩者并不相同，如癥狀性癲癇中有許多遺傳性疾病，例如結節性硬化、神經纖維瘤病等，癲癇只是這些遺傳性疾病造成的腦損傷引起的癥狀。換句話說，此時遺傳的是這些疾病本身而不是癲癇病。
