有些患癲癇的母親只考慮吃藥對孩子不好，而盲目減藥停藥，導致頻繁的癲癇大發作，其實這樣反而會對胎兒造成了更大的傷害。藥物的副作用固然可怕.服用抗癲癇藥物的婦女所生的嬰兒發生各種畸形的危險性高于正常人群2倍一3倍。各種抗癲癇的藥物對胎兒的影響也不盡相同，一般認為苯妥英鈉、魯米那、丙戊酸類藥物有較高的致畸率，其它藥物如卡馬西平等也有一定的致畸性。另外，服用抗癲癇藥物的種類越多、劑量越大，其危險性越高。

癲癇患者在懷孕過程中，由于內分泌及代謝變化，約有1/3患者癲癇發作加重，但大部分患者在妊娠期發作無變化甚至好轉。妊娠期的癲癇婦女應常規服用葉酸及多種維生素，防止癲癇藥物致畸形和分娩時可能出血的傾向。

據了解，目前我國有900多萬癲癇患者，其中三分之二的患者沒有得到有效的治療，這一方面和患者的治療意識不夠、治療不及時有關，另一方面也和傳統療法本身固有的局限性有關。醫生呼吁癲癇患者在生育之前應該得到科學治療和建議，這樣可以有效減少癲癇病遺傳的幾率。
