通常認為遺傳因素是誘發(fā)癲癇的罪魁禍首。癲癇患者親屬的患病率較普通人群顯著增高，血緣關(guān)系越近，遺傳因素的作用越明顯。癲癇發(fā)作與醒覺睡眠周期也有一定關(guān)系。例如全身性強直-陣攣發(fā)作容易出現(xiàn)于醒后兩小時、夜間入睡后及傍晚松弛期。人們通常把發(fā)生于覺醒時及傍晚時的癲癇發(fā)作稱為覺醒癲癇，約占33%;入睡后或覺醒前發(fā)作者稱為睡眠癲癇，約占44%;其他為不定期癲癇，可見睡眠周期也可以誘發(fā)癲癇。

另外，還有哪些可以誘發(fā)癲癇呢?專家介紹，發(fā)熱、過量飲水、過度換氣、飲酒、缺眠、過勞和饑餓等。某些藥物或突然撤除抗癲癇藥物，亦可導致癲癇病因發(fā)作。某些患者在強烈情感活動、精神激動、受驚、計算、弈棋、玩牌等時可促誘發(fā)癲癇，稱精神反射性癲癇。某些患者對某些特定的感覺因素，如視、聽、嗅、味、前庭、軀體覺等較為敏感，當受刺激時可引起不同類型的癲癇發(fā)作，稱反射性癲癇。

癲癇是一組由多種原因引起的慢性腦功能障礙臨床綜合征，是大腦神經(jīng)元反復放電所引起的發(fā)作性、突然性、反復性、短暫性腦神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)功能紊亂。根據(jù)大腦異常放電的部位和擴散的范圍不同，其臨床發(fā)作表現(xiàn)癥癥狀各不異。在臨床上，癲癇常表現(xiàn)為意識

障礙和全身抽搐等癥狀，最常見是全身強直陣攣發(fā)作，患者發(fā)作時表現(xiàn)為：突然意識喪失，跌倒在地，常致外傷，并見眼球上竄，口吐白沫，呼吸暫停，面色發(fā)紺，四肢強直并陣攣抽搐，持續(xù)1～2分鐘后抽搐停止，患者醒轉(zhuǎn)后對整個過程無回憶，但常自覺全身肌肉酸痛、頭痛、困倦、疲乏。這種情況可反復發(fā)作，常令家屬擔心受怕。

除了上述癥狀外，癲癇具有兩個基本特征，即發(fā)作性和反復性。所謂發(fā)作性，是指癥狀突然出現(xiàn)，也突然終止。最常見的是，患者正在行走中或吃飯時突然摔倒在地出現(xiàn)抽搐，幾分鐘后又恢復正常;兒童癲癇患者時常表現(xiàn)為：正在玩耍時或做功課時，突然出現(xiàn)發(fā)呆，持續(xù)數(shù)秒鐘后完全消失又繼續(xù)玩耍和做功課。所謂反復性，是指有第一次發(fā)作后，間隔一段時間肯定會有第2次、第3次以至多次發(fā)作。即使是最常見的抽搐，如果只發(fā)生1次，也就是不具備反復性，是不能診斷為癲癇的。
