此病只發(fā)生于小兒時期，大約占小兒癲癇的1/4，這是一類比較常見的癲癇。病兒第一次發(fā)病的年齡多在2～13歲之間，最多見于5～10歲。男孩發(fā)病比女孩略多。此病發(fā)作的時間與睡眠有密切關(guān)系，往往在病兒入睡后不久或早上醒來前后發(fā)作，有時午睡時也可發(fā)作。少數(shù)病兒白天清醒時也可發(fā)作。

本病發(fā)作開始時往往是一側(cè)面部肌肉抽動，逐漸同側(cè)上、下肢抽動，隨后發(fā)展為全身抽動。有時這個過程發(fā)展很快，當(dāng)家長發(fā)現(xiàn)時，病兒已是全身抽動了。如果在發(fā)作前孩子已經(jīng)醒來，往往表現(xiàn)有口咽部癥狀，如唾液增多，喉頭發(fā)出吞咽的聲音，或是一些口腔的異常感覺。雖然有時孩子心里明白，但卻說不出話來。

每個病兒發(fā)作的次數(shù)多少不一，有的病兒只發(fā)作1～2次，或者一年1～2次，也有的發(fā)作比較頻繁。

本病的腦電圖有特殊改變，在不發(fā)作時，表現(xiàn)為腦的中央?yún)^(qū)或顳區(qū)有棘波或棘慢波，但30%的病兒只在入睡后腦電圖才表現(xiàn)出這個特點(diǎn)。所以當(dāng)懷疑本病時，如果病兒清醒時做腦電圖正常，還需做睡眠腦電圖以明確診斷。

為什么稱這種病為良性的呢?因?yàn)檫@種病沒有腦的器質(zhì)性改變，CT及磁共振檢查也正常。得病以后孩子的智力發(fā)育不受影響，有些孩子的學(xué)習(xí)成績很好。而且隨著年齡的增大，發(fā)作越來越少，大約有一半的病兒發(fā)病3年后即可停止發(fā)作，大約有90%的病兒12歲時可停止發(fā)作，到17歲時幾乎全部病兒都停止發(fā)作了。
