其缺點在于：開顱手術的風險很高，對于手術的準確度、專業度要求非常高，只有豐富經驗的醫生，才能確保成功，而且一旦失敗，開顱手術就會造成癲癇患者二次傷害，手術留下后遺癥更是雪上加霜。最重要的一點是，傳統開顱手術仍然有40%左右的復發率。
